The Icla da Silva Foundation’s mission is to save lives by recruiting bone marrow donors and by providing support services to children and adults with leukemia and other diseases treatable by marrow transplants. The Icla da Silva Foundation was established in June of 1992 as a non-profit organization to honor the life of a thirteen-year-old Brazilian girl who bravely fought leukemia. Despite the tireless efforts of her family and friends to find her a matching donor, none was found and Icla sadly passed away. Icla's enthusiastic and hopeful last wishes to live and help people in need of bone marrow transplants inspired the Icla da Silva Foundation’s programs and activities. Over the last 21 years the Foundation has grown to become the largest recruitment organization for the Be the Match Registry, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), helping create a more diverse registry and fostering hope for patients and their families.
Marrow Donor Awareness and Recruitment
The Icla da Silva Foundation is the largest bone marrow recruitment center for the Be the Match registry. It coordinates over 3,000 new marrow recruitment drives per year to increase the general public’s awareness of the need to diversify the Be the Match Registry; at the same time we recruit and retain volunteer marrow donors.
Patient Support Services
At The Icla da Silva Foundation, we know what it means to have a loved one suffering from a critical medical condition, so we take to our hearts the mission of supporting our patients and their families. Assisting families from the United States and abroad, we provide patients with information, financial and emotional support. We often work closely with family members of patients looking for a bone marrow donor and we tailor marrow drives according to the patient’s ethnicity. We also refer patients to treatment centers across the country according to the patient’s condition, so that different medical opinions can be taken into account. We also help families to navigate the complex medical care system.
As a donor management center, the Icla da Silva Foundation works closely with pontentially matched donors and provides them the necessary support to facilitate their bone marrow donation. With a multicultural and multilingual staff, the Foundation works closely with transplant centers to ensure every matching donor receives assistance and guidance throughout the whole process.
