14,000 New Potential Bone Marrow Donors were Recruited in 2008
Seventeen years have passed by since we sadly lost Icla da Silva. But because of the work of the Icla da Silva Foundation, in 2008 alone, 25 patients received a bone marrow transplant. Icla’s wish of helping other patient once she was cured is being fulfilled.
The Icla da Silva Foundation continues to add more and more donors each year to the Be the Match Registry. In 2008, 14,000 new donors were registered making the foundation the largest recruitment organization to recruit donors from every ethnic minority backgrounds. This is so important because we will have a more diverse registry and patients from every background will have a better chance of finding a match.
For the Fiscal year 2009, 7,181 new donors have been registered. The goal for fiscal year 2009 is to add 15,000 new potential bone marrow donors.
Recruitment drives are held in many states including Massachussets, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Please help us to continue increasing the number of donors registered by registering as a potential donor if you have not done so, and/or scheduling a marrow registrations drive at your church, organization or company. Please contact us toll free at 1-888-638-2870 to find out how you can help.
This success has only been possible because of the continuing support of churches, community organizations volunteers, patients and financial contributions from individual donor and corporations like you.
